He was a pioneer in the animation and visual effects industry that redefined what could be put on screen. Morin added, “Daniel was smart, focused, an entrepreneur with a clear vision and the ability to translate it in terms that would inspire everyone around him. I met Daniel at Softimage in 1991 and worked alongside him and the highly motivated team he assembled for seven years,” said David Morin, executive director of the Academy Software Foundation, in an email to The Hollywood Reporter. Daniel was the first to systematically prioritize the artist and the user experience at a time when engineering prowess was the norm. “The success of Softimage helped Montreal become one of the most prominent hubs for animation and visual effects in the world. We’ve reached out to just a few to share their memories of the man. Langlois had a profound effect on many who are still working in the industry. The purpose of the foundation is to further artistic and scientific knowledge by fostering the meeting of art and science in the field of technology. Thanks to the sale of his company, Langlois created the Daniel Langlois Foundation, a private, philanthropic organization founded in 1997. In 1997, Langlois received a Scientific and Technical Oscar from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Softimage was later acquired in 1998 by Avid, which then sold the Softimage 3D software division to Autodesk in 2008. ![]() In 1994, Langlois negotiated a merger agreement between Softimage and Microsoft. The software was used to create 3D effects in movies such as Jurassic Park, Titanic, Men in Black, The Matrix, The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean. Softimage software helped change the way VFX in films were created. Two US citizens are being held in connection with their deaths. Daniel Langlois, who founded Softimage in 1986 and served as its president/CTO until July 1998, has died along with his partner, Dominique Marchand, on the small island of Dominica. ![]()
